Desk Jobs

Here's a question. Which age group in this country has the most desk jobs? It seems that the older you get, the more likely you are to have a desk job. I know this is true for any job I've ever had. So, what does almost every desk in this country have sitting on top of it? That's right - A COMPUTER! Now, just speaking from experience, do you think that employer owned computers are used only for the business of that employer? Of course not. People use these computers to browse the web, sign on to Myspace and Facebook, send email, and do countless other things that they should not be doing on these computers. So since all this extra, non work related activity is happening on computers sitting on desks which are populated by mostly the older segment of the workforce, is it any wonder that the older generations are the ones that use it the most? I don't need a study to tell me that!

Good point.

I do know that there are companies that are blocking certain websites and programs on company computers to prevent employees from 'wasting company time.' But I am sure they find ways around it.

Yes, my place of employment blocks certain sites from view, such as web based email, but most other sites can be viewed.

That's a good observation.

I have a desk job (well, kind of) and I'm 23. Although, I don't plan on having this job for very much longer. I also have a computer on my desk, but it's rarely used for personal things because I'm so busy.

I don't think my work blocks certain sites, but I don' think it's a bad idea.

I am a bank teller and work on a computer all day. We have a blocker called barracuda that blocks MySpace/ Facebook, and other entertainment based sites. It also blocks career-finding sites too. I only know this because I was looking for job listings for my boyfriend.

Anyway, I definitely use the computer to check Blackboard/ Vista and do some homework (like right now), and check my email. I can't do anything too "wasteful" because of he blockers, but I definitely stray from work-related things.

Funny enough I had a desk job from age 19-21. They blocked all of our social networking sites though.
